Human Acts is a sensation of a book. Originally published in Korean, it follows the lives of students, parents, and adults during the [Gwangju Uprising](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwangju_Uprising). This tragic blot in South Korean history in 1980 where martial law was declared by a dictator and upwards of 2300 people were killed by soldiers.
It's a harrowing read. The book hits hard in all the right places, and I've found myself thinking about the people in the story and the similar situations happening in our modern world today.
This book is not my average book. It took me out of my comfort zone, and I paid the price emotionally - Crying several times throughout the story.
I'd give this book 4/5, as the story is a little slow at the start and really picks up in the second half of the book.

I’m trying to push myself as both a reader and a writer this year by writing a review for the books I've read. You can find all the books I've read this year on [[2025 reading]].
