Ian Green has written a gritty, realistic, near future story about life under unchained capitalism. The environmental ecosystem has all but died, late stage capitalism runs the show, and a group of punks get pulled centre stage.
Life in this book is less about survival and more individuals coping mechanisms;
- 'Blue' has you climbing the corporate ladder eking out the last few remaining dollars to secure your own future
- 'Green' has you fighting for the environment to try and keep the planet liveable, and
- 'Black' has you totally disassociating in virtual reality for as long as possible
There's parallels to our current society woven throughout the story, helping the reader understand the future is - well, to put it bluntly - fucked unless we start intervening.
I have to admit, the story did give a 'Punks rule!' vibe at times, and there were a few occasions of eye rolling at a characters choice of actions. It wasn't bad though, certainly didn't take away from the story.
I think this story would do well if adapted for TV/streaming; I can see the gritty world building, disassociation from reality, and messages in this story coming across well via TV/streaming too.
I'd recommend this book, it's a solid 3/5 maybe even a 3.5 for the right reader in the right headspace.

I’m trying to push myself as both a reader and a writer by writing a review for the books I've read.
